Check out some pictures from SMALLVILLE‘ new episode, “Toxic” airing this Thursday, October 2, at 8pm on The CW.

Oliver Queen is in trouble this week, that’s a change, he always seem to be saving other people. I personally think any episode centered around Oliver is a good one.

You can watch a promo and check out more photos from Smallville “Toxic” below.

Episode Synopsis: “Toxic” - Oliver (Justin Hartley) collapses at a charity event and reveals he only has 24 hours to live. Clark (Tom Welling) and Chloe (Allison Mack) call Davis (Sam Witwer) for help but his prognosis is grim. Delirious, Oliver flashes back to when he was stranded on an island and first learned how to use a bow and arrow. He also recalls meeting Tess (Cassidy Freeman) for the first time on that island after she had been kidnapped by a drug runner. Meanwhile, Chloe decides to use her new powers to help save Oliver, shocking Clark.

Smallville - Episode 8.02 - Plastique

“Plastique” does indeed involve Bette Sans Souci, the character from the DC Comics universe. In this version she is a “15 year old street kid” who is injured in an explosion, and Chloe asks her to move in. (Thanks to S.A.M. for that tip!)

- Contrary to some reports that Chloe will be serving time for a while… in actuality, Chloe will no longer be incarcerated by the time this episode happens.
- Justin Hartley (Oliver) and Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy) do not appear in this episode.

This episode will explore Clark’s first day on his new job and his teaming with Lois.
- The character of paramedic Davis Bloom makes his first appearance in this episode, and he interacts primarily with Chloe.

Smallville - The Complete Seventh Season DVD Review

The season’s opening storyline that featured the return of Kara’s father, Zor-El, and Clark’s mother, Lara Lor-Van, set the tone for the rest of the season. This had the potential to be one of the best Smallville storylines in a long time. Unfortunately, this story came to an abrupt and sudden end in “Blue” that featured a rushed, uneven conclusion to what had been a well-developed narrative up until then. This trend continued throughout the season.

It’s incredibly frustrating to invest time in a show, only to watch the writers jump from one idea to the next without any forethought or planning as to how they are going to pace and organize their story. Some may blame the writers’ strike, but the problems were just as prevalent before the strike as they were afterwards. If there is one episode that exemplified what this show should aspire to, it was “Descent,” a fantastically told story that began with a major twist (if you avoided the spoilers) and brought the relationship between Clark and Lex to its pique.

Score: 6 out of 10

Video and Presentation

Like most television transfers, the image is decent but nothing to get too excited about. The vibrant colors of the show makes up for that, and the transfer is generally free of grain or ghosting and the colors work brilliantly from action sequences to character scenes. An above-average DVD.

Score: 7 out of 10

Languages and Audio

Whether it’s the WB-style soundtrack or the action-style explosions, the 5.1 surround here works above and beyond most TV DVD’s. Dynamic use of back-channels, sustainable dialogue and a rocking musical mix, Smallville won’t push your system to the limit, but it will certainly push it farther than most similar discs might. High marks for solid surround!

Score: 8 out of 10

Extras and Packaging

The extras are pretty standard here.

  • Cast/Creator Commentaries on 2 Key Episodes
  • Unaired Scenes
  • Featurette: Supergirl: The Last Daughter of Krypton
  • Featurette: Jimmy on Jimmy
  • Featurette: Smallville Legends: Kara and the Chronicles of Krypton
  • Featurette: Smallville: Visions Digital comic book

And as though the creators are tired of Clark, as well, this season’s features center much more around other characters (namely Kara). Understandably, the well of Superman-specific extras ran dry a few seasons ago, but these other character extras feel like propaganda. Last season it was the Green Arrow, this year it’s Supergirl - and it feels as though these extras are pushed on us in an attempt to launch another franchise.

Longtime fans will get a kick out of the “Jimmy on Jimmy” featurette – it brings together past and present Jimmys; i.e.: Jack Larson, Marc McClure, Aaron Ashmore and Sam Huntington. That right there is superhero history, folks - definitely check it out if you get your hands on this set.

Overall, this touted two hours of extras is pretty slim and insubstantial, failing to explain or reinvigorate a show which is clearly in search of a new and fresh direction.

Smallville TV Show Season 7 – Episode 10 Persona

Sinopse: Clark is frozen in the fortress and Bizarro takes over his life, starting with Lana, the information on stock Brainiac (James Marsters). Elsewhere, Grant shows he is a clone of Julian, and Lex is shocked by his father reaction to this revelation.

Smallville Season 8: Less Krypton, More Superman

From SyFy Portal come some minorly spoilerish details about Smallville’s 8th and final (thank goodness!) season.

Producer Darren Swimmer says that there will be less looking backward and more moving forward regarding the Superman mythos. Since this is the final season of Smallville they’re going to be concentrating on Clark Kent’s transition to the iconic superhero.

Swimmer says:

“I think we’re moving away from the Kryptonian story, last year we focused a lot on that and aspects of Clark’s past. Clark can’t escape his Kryptonian roots and that’s definitely going to come back and haunt him this season, but this year will be more about moving forward with his destiny as becoming Superman in a way that we’ve never done before.”

Barely appearing in the final season will be Laura Vandervoort, who played Clark’s cousin Kara (aka Supergirl) and of course Michael Rosenbaum and Kristen Kreuk are off the show (although I would guess they’ll probably have an appearance or two in cameo roles). On the other hand fan favorite Justin Hartley who plays Oliver Queen/Green Arrow will become a regular on the series.

I for one am very glad that the Lana character has been written off the show - that Clark/Lana thing was getting seriously old. Plus they turned her into a Machiavellian character that just didn’t really work.

They’ll be concentrating on Clark (Tom Welling), Lois (Erica Durance) and Chloe (Allison Mack). Chloe’s powers will be changing/evolving and Jimmy will have a difficult time adjusting.

No word on whether they’ll be breaking their outdated “no flights” policy, but there will be recognition by Clark that if he is to be able to fulfill his destiny as a hero he will have to resort to a dual identity.

Who knows? Perhaps under the “new management” they’ll manage to improve the show from it’s recent slide in quality and have it end on a high note.

Smallville returns to The CW on September 18th.

‘Smallville’ rocks receptive Comic-Con crowd

It’s the final day of Comic-Con 2008, but that hasn’t diminished the energy of the dedicated and rather raucous fans at the Smallville panel.

Two big announcements: Justice Society and Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns will be writing an episode. “I’m really psyched to work with everybody. I’m going to be introducing the Legion of Superheroes this season.”

Also, there’s a strong possibility that actress Allison Mack will be directing an episode, if not this season, very soon. “We’re talking. I would be honored to have the opportunity. Nothing is confirmed,” she says at first. Showrunner Todd Slavkin, however, interrupts and tells her, “Let’s make it official.” They shake hands as the crowd cheers.

A sneak peek at scenes from the upcoming eighth season also helps kick off the festivities. Some highlights: Chloe is hooked up to a device and she kicks a guy to get away; Green Arrow has a dramatic confrontation with Clark; first looks at Davis Bloom/Doomsday and Tess Mercer; Jimmy and Chloe share a moment; Tess is seen in Lex’s mansion; Clark carries Tess out of some unexplained accident.

While that’s all very exciting, it’s pretty vague on what exactly is going on, but the showrunners and actors reveal a few things for the upcoming season.

With our young man of steel, Kelly Souders tells us, “Clark is going to actively go out and seek his destiny as Superman and really take on The Daily Planet as his source to get involved and find the people who really need him throughout the city.” He also starts thinking about needing a dual identity.

Green Arrow will also do some deep thinking, questioning what he believes to be his destiny. The show will also go back and give us a little origin on him.

Mack reveals a bit about Chloe’s activities and how she feels about her powers.

“There’s a lot of struggle that [Chloe's] going to be having with trying to keep her personal relationship with Jimmy going as well as sort of trying to cut the apron strings a little bit with Clark and forge ahead into her own passions,” says Mack. “Like Clark, you’ll see Chloe step into her own and have a lot less fear about what she’s able to do now and start taking more responsibility for what she actually can achieve if she actually utilizes the powers that she’s been given.”

There’s new (bad) blood in town too in the form of Sam Witwer, who will play Davis Bloom/Doomsday, and Cassidy Freeman, who plays Tess Mercer.

“He’s paramedic, a really nice guy,” says Witwer. “Eventually he’s going to start blacking out, losing time. He’s going to wonder what’s going on during these blackout periods. What he finds out … it’s not great. Eventually the character will have to deal with that. The cool thing is we’re not trashing the Doomsday backstory. We’re adding to it and interpreting it. What we’re adding is sort of human consequence, not just the human consequence of the people he victimizes, but the human consequence for himself because this guy is actually a nice guy.”

Freeman also shares about her character: “Tess is kind of Miss Mystery. Like the Green Arrow, you’re going to find out her backstory and where she comes from. She’s the new girl at LuthorCorp and nobody really knows why, but she is. I think that she’s going to find some inner strength within herself to run this incredible company the best that she can.”

In addition, we learn that the Justice League will be “bubbling up” their activities and that other recognizable DC character will be visiting this season.

The session, however, is not just about sharing information. It’s about sharing the love. At various intervals, members of the crowd bellow out questions such as “Justin, will you give me your friendship?” or encouragement, like when Freeman says she’d like her character to kiss Chloe, one fellow predictably shouts, “Do it! Do it now!”

Two question askers are dressed up — one as pretty impressive Green Arrow complete with bow and another as Batman — and get to visit the dais. Also, each of the actors signs and then gives up their name plaque to fans who ask for them. It’s a very giving bunch here.

Other highlights/tidbits:

- The door is still open to Michael Rosenbaum, should he wish to return. One of the writers says they’ll consider one fan’s request for Sam Jones III to drop in this season since they’re only currently working on the fifth episode of 22.
- Allison Mack would love the show to crossover with Mad Men or Heroes, while two of the writers give their vote to a Supernatural crossover. Slavkin adds, “Jensen Ackles rocks!”
- There is a true ending planned. Slavkin says, “We’ve worked closely with [Al Gough and Miles Millar] for many, many years, and they’ve shared their ideas about the ending of the series. We’re hoping it doesn’t happen for quite some time. But when it does happen, I think everyone in this room will be very, very happy. We’ve got some awesome ideas that will honor the mythology in a really great way.”
- Mack doesn’t know who Chloe should be happier with — Jimmy or Clark. “I think she’d be lucky to have either of them. Clark’s really high maintenance. He takes up so much time.”
